Epilogue

Sliding the thin tome back upon the shelf between two larger ancient books. “I can’t believe you are bringing up the Valaris scrolls again, Krois.” turning back to the large table in the center of the library, which it itself was the center of the Temple of Kalos in the City of the Falls, the lower level. This was the temples secret library where they kept the most valuable tombs and scrolls. The table itself was round to accomindate the entire council RROK, Researchers and Requisitions of Kalos, Twelve Members. The only one seated at the table at this time was Krois, the newest member of the council as well as the youngest. There were two clay pitchers and globets. One of each in front of Krois. “The scrolls are just a myth, no basis in truth. The RROK is founded on facts, not disproved fiction.” Talinane quipped.

“Yes, quite true, but what was once thought of as myth before has entered the realms of fact. I give you the history of the Aztrians themselves.” Krois stated waving his hand toward the shelves.

“Yes, yes, they were once thought to be myth and then the ruins were found. I have personally read the eleven volumes of their history.” Professor Talinane stepped toward the empty chair across from Krois. “Now Krois, I will not bring this matter up at the council meeting tomorrow and neither should you. You have just gain a position to the council with your hard work in the recovering of the Journals of Philip the Wise, do not undermined that accomplishment with bringing up this myth. The Valaris scrolls do not exisit nor does that which they are supposed to lead.” Talinane sat down and rub his long white beard.

Krois who was three decades the junior of the professor, who was now fifty five suns, could have passed for a younger Talinane when he had hair upon his head and it was its original color of a reddish tint. He did not sport a beard as did his father. He did not address him as father within the temple walls. The custom of the clergy of Kalos was to address with proper ranks and titles. They both wore the same distinctive purple robes of the council with fringe of a darker purple. Each wore a amethyst ring upon there right pinky finger as each council member wore.

Kalos reached within the inner pocket of his robe and withdrew a letter and stood. “I have found new evidence that may lead to the Valaris scrolls.” he stated, tossing the letter across the table toward his father. It landed with the wax seal up. Talinane’s eyes became wide as he recognized the broken wax symbol.

“It can’t be, the Lorekeepers were disbanded over five hundred years ago.”

“This was something I found within the journals of Philip.” Krois said before he sat back down in his seat, his lips turned upward into a smile. “Although it isn’t conclusive, it does hint at a location for a clue that will lead to the location of the Valaris scrolls.” Taking hold of the clay pitcher he poured the water it contained into a waiting goblet. He drank half of it while the professor examined the wax seal. An open scroll and candle with a lit flame.

“I can not believe you kept this. This must be turned over to the council immediately.”

“We are the council” Krois exclaimed.

“You know very well what I mean Krois, we cannot keep a discovery such as this from the council. It has to be deliberated amongst the whole council before a decision is reached.” Talinane put the letter into his inside pocket. “ We will discuss it with tomorrow.”

“No!” Krois fist came down upon the table upsetting the glass, water spilling upon the wooden table. “I will be the one, give the letter back”

“Son, let me handle this.” Talinane tried to reason with offspring. “I promi…”

Krois cut him off before he could finish. “I am the one who discovered this.” He stood giving his father an angry look. “And address me by my title. Resercher Krois.” He turned and stormed out of the library through its only doors.

---------------------------------------------------------

The moon was new in the sky that evening an hour before the council was to gather in the Temple’s library. Talinane walked from the cities inn where he was staying while he was in town. He usually attended affairs of Kalos in Darian o’Dell. He rounded the corner near the dock to the road leading towards the temple. It was quiet and deserted. A cloaked figure behind a wagon brought a blow gun to his lips. The dart hit Talinane in the neck before he had a chance to react. He gasped before he fell dead in the middle of the road.

The cloaked figure rose from his position and headed toward the dead professor. He reached within the dead mans robes to retrieve a folded parchment. “Light”, he said quietly making a small gesture. A small glow appeared exposing the seal of a open scroll with a lit candle. The purple cuff of his right hand slide forward as he held up the parchment. The ring of the council on his pinky. The figure mumbled and the light vanished as quickly as it appeared.
